It’s been extremely frustrating, if not absolutely making me tear my hair out… yes… my website has been constantly crashing the server.

Nothing aggravates me more than a website not working properly… even worse is when it’s my own website doing it.

We’ve been dealing with slow speeds and collapsing website sending out Error 500 Codes. When you get an Error Code 500, it means the website is working but there is too much going on the server at the moment to give you what you want. This is constantly happening.

While programming this morning, I kept getting booted out. Though we have been on the phone with Tech Support everyday for weeks. The technician said you know you have a ton of data being transferred right now. I can see the behind the scenes and see how many hundreds of people are on. Right now, it’s not as many people as it usually is.

So I said… “How can that be?”

He’s was unsure, he said my articles are transferring a lot of data. Gigabytes of data to be specific. In fact, it’s only the 5th of August and we’ve transferred 18 Gigs already.

So I was sitting here listening and I realized… what can possibly be in my articles that are causing such a huge transfer like this? It then occurred to me… the embedded YouTube Videos.

Though the file is played from YouTube, it’s playing through my website bandwidth. Therefore people who are watching my videos through my own website are the reason why so much data is being transferred and bottle necking my entire website.

With constantly crashing, I have no choice but to remove all the embedded videos and just put direct links to YouTube where you can watch the matching tutorial on YouTube instead. For your convenience, I thought it would be helpful to view my video and pattern side by side but we are currently in the slowest period of crochet and if we cannot keep the website from crashing right now, we are doomed when we get busy.

So we have a couple weeks ahead of us to remove the embedded videos out of the website. It’s a real pain in the a.. but it’s so great to finally have a solution. It’s been a really big problem and we’ve invested a lot of dollars problem solving something… when in retrospect, seems to be an obvious issue.

Going forward, you will see my blue play bar in any patterns where there is a matching video. You click it and it will jump you directly to the video.

You can see that I have already started. This is an example of what you can expect to find.

    yay! I am one of those frustrated fans. I’m glad it wasn’t just me. I would type out a post or reply and try to load it and poof, the site would time out…thank you so much for persuing this Mikey. It had gotten to where I knew I couldnt just pop on here for a quick read because it would take forever lol. I’m so excited you’ve figured it out. Now I can spend lots more time in here 🙂

    Before you make too many changes, could you have the youtube open in a new tab rather than the same tab. Then, we could bounce back and forth on our band width, not yours.

      If you right mouse click on the link, a box show open up and show you a selection of “OPEN LINK IN NEW TAB”. Click on that and another tab will open up.
