With 6 Months to Live meet Brenda

What would you do with your time if 6 months – 1 Year is what the doctor has just told you?

Meet Brenda of Oregon. Brenda came into my life last week via email with her touching story. You see, she is on a countdown as cancer has over taken her body. With her consent, I would like to share with you her story.

Brenda Dye

Brenda, a proud grandma with her Sweet Hearts.

“I have been fighting cancer for over two years now. Sadly I am losing the fight and have been told I have probably 6 months to a year left. I’m pretty ordinary though and plan on being around longer. I have 4 kids (youngest is 13 and I plan to see her graduate high school in 4 years!!) and 2 grand kids. I am 47 years old.

I used to crochet a little bit years ago but working graveyard pretty much took all energy out of me and if I wasn’t sleeping or taking care of the family while I was at work. I came across your Facebook Page and decided to get back into crocheting and I’ve made about 5 afghans.

I am currently working on I think it’s called Rainbow Waves. I could not find 11 different colors at Walmart that worked together, so I bought 6 and will just repeat the rows.

Crochet

Brenda’s Current Project. Red Heart’s Wave Afghan.

I just wanted to tell you that you have brought crochet back into my life at a time when I really needed it. It takes me away from the sickness caused from chemo, the pain from the tumors, and the sadness knowing I’ll be leaving my family sooner than I would like. You may think that what you do is not really important, just fun. I dont know. But that’s not the case. I truly never even thought about crochet until I came across your page. You inspire me and bring me joy and peace. I cant thank you enough for that. Keep up the wonderful work that you do!”

This is why community and my Crochet Crowd Facebook Page is so important to me. We bring together people of all situations under one site. We connect, we reach out and we change others without realizing it. Your inspirational thoughts shared on another person’s comment or photo has the power to change someone’s day, outlook or spirit.

Brenda will be essentially leaving her afghans behind as she moves on. Her afghans filled with love, pain, struggle, inspiration and creativity. A memory of who she is to her family. She hooks today, so she will keep her family warm tomorrow”.

This email really touched my heart when I got this. I actually cried as I was feeling down on the day it arrived and this reminded me of what my life’s purpose is. It was very brave of Brenda to share her story with you all. She is not the only one in our community faced with these obstacles but is a reminder of how diverse, unique and special we each are.

Brenda, you brought tears to my eyes. I lost my sister to uterin cancer which brought me back to crochet. I have been making prayer shawls for others in her memory and will be making chemo caps. You keep fighting this! U will be in my prayers which I consider hugs.

  2. I hope Brenda is still around to read this. I am recovering from lung cancer surgery and I have been crocheting a lot. I finished a little sweetie dress and a matching diaper cover and am so proud of myself, as it is the biggest project I have ever finished. Thanks Mikey!

  3. Brenda, Thank You for being an Inspiration to me.

You see, I am trying to get my doctor to see that my physical pain is so intense and is connected to the multiple nodules on my Thyroid and the mass they found in my left hip and now possibly even my right hip is cancer but she will not even check me out to make a determination one way or the other so I am desperately trying to get the healthcare and pain relief I need.

So I would like to ask you to pray for me and I will pray for you as well, hun, I understand the fear and anger so if you need to talk any time just look me up at http://masqueradingcrafter.blogspot.com. In fact any of you crocheters can come for a visit …I would love the company.

  8. Kim Yahnke says:

Brenda, Don’t give up. Your story hits home for me because my mother died of cancer 4 years ago and that is when I learned to crochet. She taught me to make scrubbies over the phone. I would make one round and then call her for the next and so on. Since she has gone to Heaven i have not stopped crocheting. It keeps me close to her. Make sure you teach your daughter and the grand kids before you go if you get a chance. Life is to short and I wish you the best. |God Bless.

  9. Kathryn O'Dell says:

Brenda, my prayers are with you as you go through this trial. Know that miracles do happen and I pray that you will be one of them. You are very brave and your positive attitude is a great help to you. One of my sister-in-laws had stage 3 cancer last year and her attitude is totally positive and I am sure that that has been what brought her through it. Keep going and know that others are praying for you.

  10. Terri Kelly says:

God Bless you, Brenda. You will be in my prayers. Don’t give up.

  11. I’ve sat and stared at the screen..trying to think what to say. I don’t know what you are going through and would never even think to think I did. I hope you know how beautiful you are! Your spirit just lit up my screen! If I were closer to OR, I’d drive up just to shake your hand or give you a hug. I am gonna just believe with you for that dream of seeing your youngest graduate! Doctors are just human, they can only speak possibilities, but the human heart can overcome so many obstacles! Hang tough…and know that we are all rooting for you!

  12. Aurora says:

Una preghiera per Brenda, grande donna ❤

  13. My thoughts and best wishes are with you and your family, I am so pleased you have rediscovered crochet and are busy making afghans, they will be an inspiration for your children for the future. I made 4 last year, one for each of my children.

  14. Hi Brenda… I want you to know how brave and wonderful you are! How much YOU inspire ME! I am a crocheter myself. My husband became ill with colon cancer in March 2011 and for that next year, we lived at Peace Health South West Medical Center in Vancouver, WA and their chemo department. I crocheted more at that point than I ever had before. To keep myself and my mind busy during the surgeries, chemo treatments and times he was sleeping, I crocheted hats for the chemo department. Sadly, my beloved lost his battle on February 10, 2012 at the age of 38. Not to long after he passed, I created “Social Media Hooker” on Facebook and to this day, I still crochet hats and donate to the chemo department at Peace Health. Many of my fellow crocheters gather with me in Feb for a hat drive in his memory. What hospital are you out of hun? I would love to do a hat drive! God bless you in your fight… you have a strong will and I have know doubt you will accomplish your every desire!

  21. Tammy says:

Brenda, you are the hero. You have 4 children and 2 grandchildren who love you and will miss you terribly. I have an aunt and a cousin who are fighting the same fight you are, they are inspirations to me, with their suffering and courage, their love and strength. I will pray for you as I do for them. Just know that down here in California, you have support and love.

  22. Brenda, I smiled when I saw your picture – what an incredible joyous countenance you have! Then I cried when I read your story. Then as I stopped to pray – I pray for your total and complete healing for the glory of God. I will link hands via cyberspace with you and agree with you that you WILL be here for your daughters graduation and beyond. Know that every time I see a post from Crochet Crowd I WILL say a prayer for you! In the meantime – KEEP HOOKING GIRL!!! 🙂

  23. Mikie Graham says:

My prayers are with you and your family as you face, much too early, what we all eventually face. It is a brief separation from those we love until we are all reunited again. Those left behind will find comfort and peace looking at and holding what your very gifted hands have created. I taught my father to needlepoint and embroiderywhen he became very ill. He has been gone almost 5 years and I am surrounded by these lasting gifts. It reminds me he is still with me in spirit. God bless you and your family.

  24. Sheila says:

What a touching heart breaking story. Lots of love to Brenda. The Lord above has you in his hands. Stay strong dear lady. Oh Mikey I cried right along with you. You have touched so many lives in so many ways. You are indeed a very special man.

  25. Dearest Brenda! I have a sister-in-law fighting the same fight, and each day, I am reminded by her courage and her strength just what living is all about. Like her, you are a remarkable woman and in my deepest heart of hearts, my hope for you and she is life, love, and a cure. Peace and Love, my new friend! Keep on stitchin’!

  26. Lala Chappell says:

To Brenda: I am praying for you that you are able to spend your remaining time, however long that may be, enjoying that time with your family. I am praying for strength for your family to help them get through this time and to appreciate the remaining time, however long, He is allowing you to persevere through this terrible disease.
I am happy that you have found peace and comfort in crochet and that you have found the Crochet Crowd. Mikey is the best! When I read his blogs, I can hear his voice and it is very comforting and soothing – so full of honesty, truth and caring.
    May you go on til the end in happiness and joy. {{hugs}}
To Mikey: Thank you for sharing Brenda’s story. It is sad to know she is going to be leaving her family for a better place in Heaven, but she will be a Glorious Angel watching over her family from above, safe from the evils we are fighting here on this Earth. You, Mikey, are a Godsend to many of us. As I said above to Brenda, your honesty, truthfulness & caring goes way beyond your crocheting. Thank you for all you do! {{hugs}} ~♥~
    Lala

  27. Faye says:

Brenda, you are not only making memories and leaving warmth for you family, you are leaving the image with them of someone who made her life count. Your positive attitude will always be remembered by them. Your remaining days will be happier because you are keeping busy and your family will think back and see you crocheting wonderful memories for them. I pray you will be one of many miracles that do happen and will have a long life. Anyone with an illness that has been diagnosed as “terminal” reading your story should take note of your outlook on life. You are an inspiration to us all. Keep crocheting.

  28. Hi Brenda… thank you for sharing your story with us… as a cancer survivor I know first-hand how hard it can be to share this devastation with others… I am adding you to my prayer list and will pray for continued strength and peace for you and your family… You keep fighting, be as stubborn as you know how and let cancer know you WILL NOT GO QUIETLY… P.S. love your color choice for the Rainbow Wave afghan… ❤
