Working with others sounds really fun and dandy. You get all excited as you made a connection, only to be thoroughly disappointed in the end with other’s behavior or what the “relationship” truly meant.
I’ve had my heart broken many times with companies / individuals that express they want to work with me. However, it was up to me to prove my self worth. BUT GET THIS… they are the ones that found me, I didn’t go searching for them. It’s an interesting pickle.
I’ve had to learn a word all over again, “NO”. Before you starting backing off that I am a big time non team player. The reality for me is that I have spent 3 years already building up my dream. It’s come to a point where I have built up enough consumers and a huge following that I am either stealing away interest from others or others are looking at me to share the consumers with. Sharing = Give Companies Publicity, Linkages, or Video Promos to them… BUT THE QUESTION on my side of the fence is…
What do I get when I promote others?
At trade shows and festivals, we are usually inundated with consumers laughing, joking, buying, and participating in our display. We have created an interactive play centre which creativity flows. Neighbouring vendors get all uptight as people tend to by pass non interesting booths and go directly to where all the action is. Isn’t that just a human thing to do?
To make good decisions, wait until after the show has finished before negotiating with others. If they have sought you out, there must be a reason for it. I am bad for not establishing something in writing first but I have got much smarter. Establish a contract or agreement prior to starting up with them. What is your obligation and for how long?
I had a major company want to tap into my market. I was given background advice from another company. I decided to hold my ground and wait. There is no reason why I should have to prove myself when they are the ones that called me. This decision to hold saved me a great deal of time and money loss. I would have gone to extra work in which this company would have financially benefited from consumer sales while I would get nothing for proving my market share. In experience I had with this before, I have had to prove myself several times where companies have made several 1000’s of dollars and then changed their minds. Changing their minds after I have promoted the company. They received so much free publicity and I got “We’ve changed our minds!”.
You have to watch the bigger companies… they will squeeze you for all you got leaving you behind… all at your expense. Be smart and when you are thinking there is doubt, step back and re-evaluate. May be the best thing you could ever do for yourself.
